Resource: Communication strategies
Learning activity 2 – Scenario
A parent and/or carer calls you and begins to accuse you of not doing enough to support their young person during the transition process. The parent and/or carer tells you they are worried their young person won't be prepared and won't make any friends at their new school. Their voice becomes raised as they start to talk about all the issues their young person has had during primary school.
- How would you handle this situation?
- What, specifically, would you say to this parent and/or carer? Why?
- What verbal and non-verbal strategies would you use? Why?
- How could you manage your own emotions and those of the parent and/or carer?
- What would you do after the conversation ends?
Finally, how can you look after your own emotions and wellbeing after engaging in conflict? Again, there are several ideas to help you, so add to this list as needed.
Strategies to manage emotions
- Acknowledge your own feelings
- Debrief with a trusted friend or colleague
- Reflect on what went well and what needs to be done differently
- Recognise when conflict becomes bullying
- Report the issue to your manager or school leader when needed
- Ask for help – don't do it alone
