Learning activity 1 – Conflict – Understanding and management practices

The purpose of this task is to understand the implications of conflict, and consider possible practices to manage conflict. Being prepared can help us all to engage and manage conflicts.

Reflect on the table below. What kind of conflicts might you encounter during the transition process, and what might be the reason that these conflicts occur? Think about this in the context of parent/carer:teacher, teacher:teacher, teacher:school leader, student:teacher, and student:student relationships during the transition process.

Example Reason conflict may occur
Disagreement between
parent/carer and teacher over
how best to support a child
during transition

Emotions about change

Misunderstanding

Unrealistic parent/carer (or teacher) expectations

Poor communication

Lack of understanding of individual student needs
