School transition
School transition is a long and continual process that needs to be acknowledged throughout the final year of primary school and the first year of secondary school. It is not meant to be a ‘one-off’ activity.
In Year 6, teachers, students, and parents and carers are already beginning to think about ‘change’ and what this will involve. So, despite the already-busy school calendars, transition needs to be independently managed in each school community and culture according to the needs, values, and mission statements of your school. But, don’t leave this too late. Realise too, that as a primary school teacher, you are generally dealing with one zoned secondary school and perhaps other government, Catholic or independent schools. As a secondary school you will manage multiple primary ‘feeder’ schools. Collaboration across schools needs significant planning and implementation time.
