Learning activity 2b – Collaborating with feeder primary schools

Secondary school educators need to establish a collaborative relationship with their (main) feeder primary schools. Secondary schools have many feeder schools and establishing several programs may need to be considered in planning.

The following activity involves strategies to develop mutual collaboration and transition programs that can work successfully.

    Discuss

Discuss with your secondary school colleagues:

    Mentoring programs

    • Shine a light on things
Is it possible for current secondary students to work with incoming Year 6 students?
    • Investigate the possibility of students currently in Year 7 or other year levels to train as mentors (see also Learning Activity 4)

    Secondary school visits

    What do you currently offer?

    • Do you have transition days? What activities are provided on that day?
    • What possibilities are there to have short visits for Year 6 students to take part in a Maths or Art lesson, for example? This type of transition experience can also support such experiences as students themselves with the school layout, expectations in class, school rules, and getting to know the teachers and leaders. It provides a gradual entry to secondary school life.
