Learning activity 2a – Collaborating with destination secondary schools

Guide to Thrive backpack

Primary school educators need to establish a collaborative relationship with their students’ (main) prospective secondary schools. Primary schools are usually familiar with the destination secondary schools in their area, and will often have a relationship with them based upon past and present programs, and professional relationships.

The purpose of this learning activity is to investigate and communicate with relevant staff in secondary schools.

Discuss

Discuss with your primary school colleagues:

  • What previous strategies have been put into place to collaborate with secondary schools?
  • What worked well and what didn’t work as well? Why?

Investigate

Investigate contacts. Who is currently in charge of student transition? Is there a new contact in the school?

  • Email and organise a time to meet electronically or in person.
  • Set an agenda to discuss transition with the secondary school contact.
