The transition phase
Adolescence is a developmental stage associated with various transitions. These include biological, cognitive and social-emotional changes that are sometimes occurring simultaneously and can pose significant challenges to adolescents as they adjust to new states of being.
The transition from primary to secondary schooling occurs during this developmental stage, which often requires adjustment to new modes of teaching and learning, as well as new peer networks. Students who transition successfully are more likely to have higher or long-term success in measures of academic engagement and outcomes, and social-emotional and behavioural competencies, while students who do not transition well are at greater risk of dropping out of school (Gonzales et al., 2014; Grossman & Cooney, 2009).
Therefore, resources and programs that support students to successfully navigate the transition from primary to secondary school are crucial. Resources and programs that support parents and carers, teachers and friends are also important as these are the people who provide an immediate support network to transitioning students.
