Can emotional intelligence be learnt (and taught)?

The good news is that yes, emotional intelligence can be taught and learnt. Start by considering the following:

  1. Observe how you react to people. What do you do or say when someone does or says something you like/don't like?
  2. Look at your environment. What kind of school do you work in? How do others respond to each other?
  3. Do a self-evaluation. Reflect on the areas of emotional intelligence you do really well, and the ones that may need more practice.
  4. Examine how you react to stressful situations. How do you feel? What do you do/say? Can you talk about these emotions?
  5. Take responsibility for your actions. Realise that no one is in control of their emotions all of the time.
  6. Examine how your actions will affect others – before you take those actions. Think about what to do next time and learn from the moments where things don't go the way you want them to.

Now, consider ways to encourage your students to reflect on their own emotional intelligence. What can you say or do that encourages students to reflect on their feelings, behaviours, and responses to stressful situations?
